Breastfeeding

August 3rd, 2006 · 4 Comments

I’ve heard Mummy talking about Breastfeeding and how she’s always wanted to feed me this way so I was interested in finding out what it was all about and why she is choosing breastfeeding over bottle or formula feeding. Here’s what I found:

Disadvantages of Breastfeeding

  1. Mummy will have less time because of longer/more frequent feeding periods
  2. Mummy will have less sleep because of above
  3. Daddy may feel left out
  4. Mummy may have to be careful of her diet as what she eats, I eat.
  5. Mummy may get complications such as cracked/sore nipples, engorgement and mastitis
  6. Might sometimes be tricky feeding me when we are out

Advantages of Breastfeeding

  1. The best source of nutrition for me
  2. Breast milk contains antibodies that will protect me from tummy infections, urinary tract infections, breathing infections, pneumonia, food allergies, tooth decay, meningitis and ear infections
  3. Breastfeeding will help my jaw and facial muscles to develop properly
  4. Breastfed babies are less susceptible to Cot Death and have extra protection against types of heart disease and cancer, thrush, eczema, obesity, juvenile diabetes and Crohn’s disease
  5. Breast milk will make me clever (studies have shown this so it must be true)
  6. There is no need for sterilising or special equipment
  7. Breastfeeding will create a bonding between me and Mummy
  8. Breastfeeding will help Mummy lose weight after I’m born as it uses up 500 calories an hour a day
  9. Mummy’s uterus will contract quickly after birth which reduces the amount of blood lost after the delivery.
  10. Breast feeding is free (Daddy says that this is his favourite reason but I know he’s only joking)
  11. Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of Mummy developing breast and ovarian cancer

After comparing the disadvantages of breastfeeding with the advantages, I’m really glad this is the way that Mummy and Daddy want to feed me.

[…] Breastfeeding is how Mummy always knew she would feed me and in a previous post I went through all the good things I’d found out about breastfeeding. We’ve been very lucky because we haven’t had any problems. I know that some babies don’t latch on easily but I just grab the breast and go! We thought at first that we might have a problem because apparently Mummy has flat nipples. This is something she never realised before I came along, but both her doctor and midwife pointed it out before I was born. At first Mummy was a little upset as she thought it meant that she wouldn’t be able to breastfeed, but the midwife told her that with a nipple guard I would still be able to latch on. Apparently it also works for women with inverted nipples. It also stops her breasts from becoming cracked and sore and the way I grab on sometimes I think she’s quite glad that she needs it! […]

[…] As I’ve mentioned here and here, I’m a breastfed baby and think that it is the most wonderful way to get all of my nutritional needs as well as bond with Mummy. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks like this which is why Jennifer Laycock has set up a website called The Lactivist to “promote breastfeeding through humor.” […]
