Happy Spitter

December 4th, 2006 · No Comments

Well! I have been giving Mummy and Daddy a bit of a hard time lately - ha ha ha. Reason being, I’ve been spitting up quite a lot. No sooner have I been fed than “burrrrrrrrp” out it all seems to come. Mummy has eliminated lots of foods from her diet which does seem to have helped (major culprits were garlic, pork, mustard and cabbage) but every so often I seem to decide that it’s fun to wear 6 outfits in one day and out it all comes. So Mummy went looking for clues on the Internet as to what she could do about all this.

She knew that some babies just spit up more than others and apparently I am what some people call a “happy spitter.” It basically means there’s nothing wrong with me, I’m growing the way I should (and how!), gaining weight and all that, I just spit up a lot sometimes. To combat the spit-ups Mummy now burps me during feedings rather than waiting until the end. This means that I sometimes have shorter feedings but then eat more frequently. She also ensures that I stay upright after feedings and I can’t be bounced about after feedings (not that they used to do this as it seems like asking for trouble).

My increased spit-ups could be because I am almost four months old, as this is when they tend to peak. There are a lot of technical, biological details about spit-ups that I don’t really understand, but it basically has to do with my stomach and my oesophagus not being mature enough. Apparently there is a little valve that closes the stomach so that food doesn’t come back up again. I found somewhere that explains it all nicely http://parenting.lifestyle.excite.com/newbaby/newbaby_pediatrics/spitup.html

Now I need to deal with my other end so until next time, bye bye
