Saying Goodbye to my Midwife

September 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Today  Yesterday was my last visit to the clinic where I was born as today it was my last postnatal class (Mummy has two more but babies and Daddies are encouraged to stay at home).

There were only 5 babies in the class so it was nice and relaxed although it was surprising to see how quickly the waste bin can get filled with nappies!

As usual our midwife went around the class asking if everything was OK or if there were any problems. Yet again, Mummy and Daddy had to say that everything was fine and that there were no worries. Yet again, Mummy and Daddy were greeted with disbelieving looks. It was as if they were being told that it was OK to have problems and to talk about them but honestly, everything IS fine.

I really felt sorry for one of the babies. His mummy was in tears when she explained how hard looking after her baby was. His daddy worked nights and his mummy didn’t have any other help. She was so tired. Our midwife said lots of things to help her feel better.

Mummy, Daddy and I are very lucky.

The rest of the class was more about baby massage and it concentrated on the tummy and legs. All the babies had to get undressed and all the Mummies and Daddies were shown how to stimulate the tummy, with emphasis on developing the digestive system to help alleviate colic. It worked! Daddy thought the class was hilarious as he’d never heard so many babies breaking wind. He was also pleased to see that most of the babies weed on their Mummies - he thought that it was something that I did just for him!

I also got weighed. According to the electronic scales I now weigh 5.120 Kgs (a 290g increase from last Thursday).

After class it was time to go home (actually we went to the mall in Girona to get baby clothes - I slept through it all). My midwife told us that was can always call ’round to the clinic if we have any questions or problems but now that I have my own paediatrician we probably won’t (* touch wood *).

I can’t thank her enough. She was the person who helped me be born, who introduced me to Mummy and Daddy, who changed my first nappy and gave me my first bath. Thank you.

Until next time, bye bye.
