As I sit here waiting to come out of Mummy and meet the world I realise that every now and then I have to make decisions that will resonate throughout my life.
One such decision is what to call my Grandparents.
Let’s recap here: I’m going to be brought up as a bilingual baby because Mummy’s half Danish and Daddy’s English.
Concentrate now ‘cos you’re about to learn some Danish:
Mummy, in Danish, is Mor.
Daddy in Danish is Far.
With these two words you can describe an entire generation of relationships:
Mormor = Mummy’s Mummy = Maternal Grandmother
Morfar = Mummy’s Daddy = Maternal Grandfather
Farmor = Daddy’s Mummy = Fraternal Grandmother
Farfar = Daddy’s Daddy = Fraternal Grandfather
As you might have guessed; I’m going to call my Mummy’s Mummy and Daddy “Mormor and Morfar”
On Daddy’s side of the equation I have the choice of Grandma, Grandpa, Nanny and so on. When Daddy was little like me he called his Daddy’s Mummy Grandma and his Mummy’s Mummy Nana. Keeping with this tradition I’d like to call my Daddy’s Mummy Grandma and Daddy’s Daddy Grandpa.
Until next time, bye bye
